Volterra

This magical, mysterious city is the home of many extremely interesting works of art and monuments, many of them dating back to antiquity Volterra being not only the capital of the Etruscans, but also an important Roman centre and a powerful medieval city. Walking through the town is a memorable experience; every step you take is like going back into the past.  Within the ancient town wall you can admire the historic centre which ranks among some of the best preserved, the Roman amphitheatre and a very interesting museum.

Siena and San Gimignano

Few areas in the world can boast the variety of landscape and economy that Siena has. Starting in the north with the incomparable beauty of the Chianti landscape, with its neat rows of vines and olive trees standing out on the hillsides that have been over the centuries been tamed by the peasants’ knowledge and skill. But it is on top of the hills that the old towns of Siena, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano were built, now busy tourist centres, silhouetted against the moon like solitary horsemen.

Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina and Larderello

The Valle del diavolo (Devil's Valley) near Larderello is a must for those who like breathtaking views. Enel (The Electricity Board) is tapping the sulphur fumaroles for energy and heat. The production of energy using natural thermal resources is the main, and probably most important, characteristic and business in the Cecina Valley. The large towers that mushroom up across the landscape, producing clouds of white steam, are a fascinating sight for visitors. These fumaroles are proof of the activity below the earth’s crust, energy that only in the last few decades has been harnessed for man’s use. It is a unique sight that is really worth seeing.
